Digitization in the construction industry: an analysis by RICS

RICS has published its new Digitalization in Construction Report 2024, with the aim of investigating the level of digital adoption in the construction sector.

Although there has been an increase in the use of digital tools in the sector, the overall percentage of projects in which these tools are not used has risen slightly, from 40% in 2021 to 43% in 2023. More specifically, digital technologies are most commonly used for monitoring safety and project progress (41%) and for cost estimation and management (the top area of global adoption), while they remain underutilized for calculating carbon footprints (only 8% use them on all projects) and for monitoring the social impacts of projects.

Awareness is growing in the construction sector regarding the role that Artificial Intelligence will play in the future, while the adoption of digital tools in high-impact areas, such as life-cycle assessment and ESG metrics, remains stagnant. The report highlights the need to overcome current barriers to adoption, represented by implementation costs and a lack of digital skills.

Among its recommendations, RICS suggests an integrated approach that prioritizes effective information management, digital skills training, the ethical adoption of AI, and greater data sharing among industry players to foster a truly effective and sustainable digital “transformation” in the sector.
